Abstract Tea polysaccharides was one of the active ingredients of Qingzhuan dark tea, which had antioxidant, anti-tumor, and immune-enhancing effects. The complexation of metal ions of tea polysaccharides was one of the current research hotspots. It can combine the advantages of tea polysaccharides and their complexed trace metal elements, and had great potential development. In this study, the trace element-copper required by the human body was used for complexation with Qingzhuan dark tea polysaccharides, and the structure was characterized by various chemical methods. The copper complexes of Qingzhuan dark tea polysaccharides were characterized by UV spectroscopy, FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, AFM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The tests results show that it was successfully complexed with tea polysaccharides. Meanwhile, the Qingzhuan dark tea polysaccharides copper complex compound (termed TPS-Cu) showed higher scavenging activity of hydroxyl radical and ABTS free radical than the tea polysaccharides (termed TPS). Therefore, TPS-Cu can be used as a potentially effective and stable copper supplement and preventive agent.

Abstract To produce Qingzhuan dark tea polysaccharide–zinc (TPS–Zn), tea polysaccharides (TPS) were isolated from Qingzhuan dark tea and complexed with a zinc salt in the present study. The thermogravimetric analysis, molecular weight analysis, atomic absorption spectrum, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, ultraviolet spectrum, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic mechanical microscope were used for qualitative and quantitative characterisation. The findings demonstrated and verified that complex reactions between zinc ions and TPS had occurred. After the Zn2+ complex was modified, the structure of TPS became more stable. The complex was homogeneous in composition and did not comprise any nucleic acid or protein. It is a zinc supplement that may be studied.

Abstract Anaemia, caused by iron deficiency, is a common disease in some parts of the world. A traditional medicine for treating anaemia resulting from iron deficiency is inorganic iron, which is represented by ferrous sulfate. However, serious irritation to the gastrointestinal tract is one of the side effects caused by inorganic iron. We extracted the tea polysaccharide (TPS) from Qingzhuan Dark Tea and employed a green technology to prepare a polysaccharide–iron [TPS-Fe(III)] complex. We further characterised the structure through thermogravimetric analysis, molecular weight analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic mechanics microscopy. We performed a comparative evaluation of the antioxidant properties of the TPS-Fe(III) complex and TPS. The results indicated that the antioxidant activity of the TPS-Fe(III) complex is superior to that of TPS. The scavenging activity was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydroxyl, superoxide anion, and 2,2'-azobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activity assays and malondialdehyde inhibition assay. The structure of the TPS-Fe(III) complex formed by the complexation of the tea polysaccharide with iron ions was highly stable, which significantly improved its antioxidant activity in vitro. Thus, the TPS-Fe (III) complex can provide additional health benefits compared with other typical non-antioxidant iron nutritional supplements.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to assess the correlation between Sjögren′s Syndrome (SS) and adverse pregnancy outcomes, with the aim of providing a basis for preconception and pregnancy interventions in women with SS. Methods A search of electronic databases in English and Chinese databases from January 2005 to December 2021, was conducted to collect the literature of case-control studies or cohort studies on the association between SS and pregnancy outcome studies. Literature inclusion and data extraction were performed according to established criteria, and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to evaluate the quality of the literature. Stata 15 software was used for meta-analysis. Results A total of nine papers were included in this study. Meta-analysis results showed that SS was associated with spontaneous abortion (RR = 8.85, 95% CI 3.10‒25.26), preterm birth (RR = 2.27, 95% CI 1.46‒3.52), low birth mass (RR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.34‒2.97), and birth defects (RR = 4.28, 95% CI 3.08‒5.96). Conclusion SS can increase the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

ABSTRACT Hybrid rice seeds from sterile lines have displayed a new type of heavy chalkiness in the subtropical zone of China in recent years, which was named top-gray chalkiness, resulting in a lower quality of hybrid rice seeds in large-scale production. In this study, the morphological characteristics of the chalky hybrid rice seeds were investigated, the microscopic structures of their chalky parts observed, the α-amylase activit and relative nutrient content analyzed, and the germination indexe and microorganism populations of the chalky hybrid seeds determined. The results revealed that top-gray chalkiness in hybrid rice seeds originated from the top site of the grain, and that the chalky part was probably infected by bacteri and fungi to form a gray colo and which further resulted in a lower germination rat and germination potential. This observed chalkiness in rice seeds differed from the previously reported rice chalkiness categories both in the occurrence positio and color. Besides, the amylopectin content declined in the chalky par and the protein content in the chalky part increased as compared to the normal seeds. This research could provide technical support for the hybrid rice breeding enterprises during the breeding of hybrid rice seeds in large-scale production.

This study aimed to investigate the predictive factors for uveitis recurrence (UR) risk in Behcet's disease (BD) patients. BD patients (n=164) with a history of uveitis were recruited, and demographic data, clinical features, and laboratory tests were recorded. Uveitis was defined as anterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, panuveitis referring to the “International Uveitis Study Group recommendations for the evaluation of intraocular inflammatory disease”. In total, there were 70 UR patients and 94 non-UR patients. Compared to non-UR patients, UR patients appeared to be older and presented with increased uveitis occurrence rate and times within 3 months, oral ulcers occurrence rate, as well as higher concentrations of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and serum amyloid A (SAA). Multivariate logistic model disclosed that uveitis occurrence times within 3 months, oral ulcers, TG, LDL, and SAA independently predicted higher risk of UR. Furthermore, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the combination of uveitis occurrence times within 3 months, oral ulcers, TG, LDL, and SAA exhibited a high predictive value for UR risk with an area under the curve of 0.983 (95%CI: 0.969−0.998). In conclusion, uveitis occurrence times within 3 months, oral ulcers, TG, LDL, and SAA might be potential predictive factors for UR risk in BD patients, which can help in prevention and management of the disease.

Abstract Background: Long non-coding RNA small molecule RNA host gene 1 (SNHG1) was previously identified to be relevant with Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis. This work aims to further elucidate the regulatory networks of SNHG1 involved in PD. Methods: 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-hydrochloride (MPTP)-induced mice and 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+)-treated SH-SY5Y cells were respectively constructed as the in vivo and in vitro PD models. Expression levels of SNHG1 and miR-153-3p were detected by qRT-PCR. Protein expression levels of phosphate and tension homology deleted on chromosome ten (PTEN) were measured by western blotting assay. Cell viability and apoptosis were determined by MTT and flow cytometry assays. The interactions among SNHG1, miR-153-3p and PTEN were identified by luciferase reporter assay, RNA immunoprecipitation, and/or RNA pull-down analysis. Results: Increased SNHG1 expression was found in midbrain of MPTP-induced PD mice and MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y cells. Overexpression of SNHG1 lowered viability and enhanced apoptosis in MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y cells. Moreover, SNHG1 acted as a molecular sponge to inhibit the expression of miR-153-3p. Furthermore, miR-153-3p-mediated suppression of MPP+-induced cytotoxicity was abated following SNHG1 up-regulation. Additionally, PTEN was identified as a direct target of miR-153-3p, and SNHG1 could serve as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) of miR-153-3p to improve the expression of PTEN. Besides, enforced expression of PTEN displayed the similar functions as SNHG1 overexpression in regulating the viability and apoptosis of MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y cells. Finally, SNHG1 was found to activate PTEN/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in SH-SY5Y cells by targeting miR-153-3p. Conclusion: SNHG1 aggravates MPP+-induced cellular toxicity in SH-SY5Y cells by regulating PTEN/AKT/mTOR signaling via sponging miR-153-3p, indicating the potential of SNHG1 as a promising therapeutic target for PD.

ABSTRACT To increase rice yield potential, field experiments were conducted in farmers’ paddies in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen applications on the yield and panicle components of three typical indica hybrid rice varieties in Sichuan Province. The number of grains per panicle resulting from late nitrogen application (LA) was 12 % greater than that obtained from traditional nitrogen application (TA); this increase was the main source of improvements in yield. The number of surviving and differentiated spikelets (NSS and NDiS) resulting from LA was significantly higher than that measured under TA, especially for the Fyou498 cultivar, where the NSS and NDiS increased by 15 % and 14 %, respectively. Compared with TA, the number of degenerated secondary branches and the percentage of degenerated secondary branches (NDeSB and PDeSB) were significantly reduced by 9 % and 11 %, respectively, by LA. This is the first study to demonstrate that an increase in NSS and a decrease in NDeSB lead to yield-improving effects attributable to LA. The grain yields of different varieties ranged from 9225.6 to 9408.7 kg ha−1, the PDeSB was as high as 31 %, and the number of surviving secondary branches (NSSB) was significantly and positively correlated with NSS. These data indicate that the yield of indica hybrid rice has considerable potential for being improved, and increasing NSSB is key to increasing NSS and improving the grain yield. These improvements should be pursued so as to increase the yield of hybrid rice to ensure both food security and sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract This article investigates the recent Confucian revival movements in mainland China by looking at three specific aspects: the campaign of reciting Confucian classics, the revival of Confucian academies, and the restoration of Confucian rites. It also examines the phenomenon of Jiang Qing, a so-called Confucian fundamentalist, who has been a central figure behind all the Confucian revival movements. By borrowing Anthony Wallace’s and Rodney Stark’s theories on religious fundamentalism, the article argues that the socio-political and cultural conditions of contemporary China have paved the way for the emergence of traditionalistic movements, with the Confucian revival being one example, and that the combination of Jiang Qing’s fundamentalist philosophy and his strict moral self-discipline has endowed the Confucian initiative with a touch of religious sincerity.

Resumen Este artículo investiga los recientes movimientos confucianos en la China continental examinando tres aspectos específicos: la campaña de recitar los clásicos confucianos, el renacimiento de las academias confucianas, y la restauración de los ritos confucianos. También examina el fenómeno de Jiang Qing, el llamado fundamentalista confuciano, que ha sido una figura central detrás de todos los movimientos confucianos. Con el préstamo de las teorías de Anthony Wallace y de Rodney Stark en el fundamentalismo religioso, el artículo argumenta que las condiciones sociopolíticas y culturales de la China contemporánea han allanado el camino para el surgimiento de los movimientos tradicionalistas, con el confuciano como un ejemplo, y que la combinación de filosofía fundamentalista de Jiang Qing y su autodisciplina estricta moral ha dotado a la iniciativa confuciana con un toque de sinceridad religiosa.

Ensayos de laboratorio (Institute of Entomology, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China) fueron llevados a cabo con el objeto de determinar el potencial de virtako, una mezcla insecticida, que contiene 20% de clorantra-niliprole y 20% de tiametoxam, contra el saltahojas marrón, Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae). Los efectos tóxicos del virtako sobre los estadios ninfales de N. lugens indicaron que todos ellos fueron susceptibles a las cinco concentraciones (16, 8, 4, 2, 1 mg/L). El primero-segundo estadios fueron los más susceptibles, y las concentraciones media letales [CL50] fueron 4,76, 1,96 y 0,85 mg/L a 24, 48 y 72 h, respectivamente, después del tratamiento. El estadio quinto fue el menos susceptible con valores de CL50 de 23,76, 7,25 y 3,95 mg/L a 24, 48 y 72 h, respectivamente, después del tratamiento. Estos fueron significativamente mayores comparados con los estadios primero-segundo. Las CL50s para los estadios tercero - cuarto fueron 11,59, 5,72 y 2,17 mg/L a 24, 48 y 72 h respectivamente, después del tratamiento. Estos resultados indican que virtako puede ser una alternativa efectiva en el control del saltahojas marrón N. lugens, al retardar los niveles de resistencia al tiametoxam.

Laboratory assays (Institute of Entomology, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China) were conducted to assess the potential of virtako, a mixture insecticide, which contains 20% chlorantraniliprole and 20% thiamethoxam, against the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae). The toxic effects of virtako against the nymphal instars of N. lugens indicated that all instars were sensitive to the five concentrations (16, 8, 4, 2, 1 mg/L). The first-second instars were the most susceptible, and the median lethal concentrations [LC50] were 4.76, 1.96 and 0.85 mg/L at 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment, respectively. Fifth-instars were the least susceptible with the LC50 values of 23.76, 7.25 and 3.95 mg/L at 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment, respectively, and were significantly greater than those of the first - second instars. The LC50s of the third - fourth instars were 11.59, 5.72 and 2.17 mg/L at 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment, respectively. These results indicate that virtako might be an effective alternative for the control of BPH N. lugens, by delaying the resistance levels of thiamethoxam.

Over the past three decades, mortality from lung cancer has sharply and continuously increased in China, ascending to the first cause of death among all types of cancer. The ability to identify the actual sequence of gene mutations may help doctors determine which mutations lead to precancerous lesions and which produce invasive carcinomas, especially using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology. In this study, we analyzed the latest lung cancer data in the COSMIC database, in order to find genomic "hotspots" that are frequently mutated in human lung cancer genomes. The results revealed that the most frequently mutated lung cancer genes are EGFR, KRAS and TP53.In recent years, EGFR and KRAS lung cancer test kits have been utilized for detecting lung cancer patients, but they presented many disadvantages, as they proved to be of low sensitivity, labor-intensive and time-consuming. In this study, we constructed a more complete catalogue of lung cancer mutation events including 145 mutated genes. With the genes of this list it may be feasible to develop a NGS kit for lung cancer mutation detection.

A mutant designated NC2168, which was selected from wild-type Streptococcus equisimilis CVCC55116by ultraviolet ray combined with60Co-γ ray treatment and does not produce streptolysin, was employed to produce hyaluronic acid (HA). In order to increase the output of HA in a flask, the culture medium and conditions for NC2168 were optimized in this study. The influence of culture medium ingredients including carbon sources, nitrogen sources and metal ions on HA production was evaluated using factional factorial design. The mathematical model, which represented the effect of each medium component and their interaction on the yield of HA, was established by the quadratic rotary combination design and response surface method. The model estimated that, a maximal yield of HA could be obtained when the concentrations of yeast extract, peptone, glucose, and MgSO4 were set at 3 g/100 mL, 2 g/100 mL, 0.5 g/100 mL and 0.15 g/100 mL, respectively. Compared with the values obtained by other runs in the experimental design, the optimized medium resulted in a remarkable increase in the output of HA and the maximum of the predicted HA production was 174.76 mg/L. The model developed was accurate and reliable for predicting the production of HA by NC2168.Cultivation conditions were optimized by an orthogonal experimental design and the optimal conditions were as follows: temperature 33ºC, pH 7.8, agitation speed 200 rpm, medium volume 20 mL.

Psychological factors can be correlated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), but the mechanisms are unknown. In the present study, we examined the microstructural changes and expression of proinflammatory cytokines in mandibular condylar cartilage of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in a psychological stress animal model. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (8 weeks old, 210 ± 10 g) were randomly divided into 3 groups: psychological stress (PS, N = 48), foot shock (FS, N = 24), and control (N = 48). After inducing psychological stress using a communication box with the FS rats for 1, 3, or 5 weeks, PS rats were sacrificed and compared to their matched control littermates, which received no stress and were killed at the same times as the PS rats. Body and adrenal gland weight were measured and corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. After hematoxylin-eosin staining for histological observation, the ultrastructure of the TMJ was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Transcription and protein levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were evaluated by ELISA and semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The PS group showed a significantly higher adrenal gland weight after 3 weeks of stress and higher hormone levels at weeks 1, 3, and 5. Histopathological changes and thinning cartilage were apparent at weeks 3 and 5. In the PS group, TNF-α increased at 1, 3, and 5 weeks and IL-1β increased significantly after 1 and 3 weeks of stress, and then decreased to normal levels by 5 weeks. Psychological stress increased plasma hormone levels and RT-PCR indicated increased IL-1β and TNF-α expression in the TMJ in a time-dependent manner. These results suggest that cytokine up-regulation was accompanied by stress-induced cartilage degeneration in the mandibular condyle. The proinflammatory cytokines play a potential role in initiating the cartilage destruction that eventually leads to the TMDs.
